Course Summary

The course does have some fun and beautiful holes, especially after the turn. Front nine is wide open and pretty basic but there are some fun holes on the back nine with water, marshland and strategy off the tee. The entire course is very flat and is a recommended walking course.

Clubhouse is solid. Decent room on the inside and looks nice on the outside. Driving range is decent, with good yardage markers a little pavilion behind to take a break or have spectators watch in the shade. The range is mats only however. Practice putting green was in bad shape with dead spots covering the surface.

Staff was great both on the phone and in the clubhouse. Informative and kind to not only me but all those who were in the clubhouse.

Crane Field is an 18 hole course located in Clinton, Utah. This course is quite short (6300 yards from the tips) and very little danger from tee to green. Throw in three of the shortest par 5’s I have ever played (#7 – 442 yards; #14 – 421 yards and #16 – 405 yards), and this course will be one of the easiest you can play in Utah. Not a fan of throwing in short Par 5’s to fill a par 72 round. Would much rather the course played at 70 par with one short par 5.

Conditions

The condition of the course was not great. Tee boxes were in decent shape but the rest of the course was poor. Humongous dead spots throughout fairways and greens. The sand bunkers are a little more gravel than sand bunker. I would not recommend playing out of these bunkers with fear of scratching your clubs. Some of my best lies were actually in the rough due to landing in some of the major dead spots throughout the fairway.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #12 Par 4 351 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A fun, memorable hole that requires strategy off the tee. A blind, forced carry of over 200 yards to the fairway (from the tips) requires a decent tee shot. Water and deep marsh all along the left side of the hole. Aim for the right-center fairway as the creek cuts into the left side of the fairway. Hitting short and to the left risks another blind shot for the approach due to the tall marshland jetting in from the left side and another set of bushes on the right side. This allow for a tiny opening to actually see the green and the flag. The Utah Golf Guy recommends hitting 3-wood off the tee to not sacrifice too much distance but to still have an angle towards the green. Little to no trouble going right of the fairway if you want to play it safe. Green has a valley running through the middle, collecting all shots landing on the green.

Birdie Time - #14 Par 5 421 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

For easiest birdie hole, take your pick on any of the three short par 5’s. I’ll pick the shortest one. Fairway bunkers pinch in from both sides but if you can get through or over, you should be putting for a decent eagle putt. Fairway slopes slightly uphill adding just a few more yards to the hole.  A lake horseshoes around the hole from the back left to the front right. If the water scares you (although you should be hitting your approach with a wedge) there is room to the left with a small bunker. From 150 yards, green is level for the approach. Starting around the 100 yard marker, the fairway slopes downhill and then back up closer to the green. 10 yards between the green and the water on the right side. 15 yards between the green and the water on the backside. Green slopes uphill.

Clubhouse Pick: 16

Likely Bogey - #4 Par 4 390 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

This hole plays across the street and along with #5 plays separate from the rest of the course. This hole is a good one. A forced carry over a pond directly in front of the tee box starts out the nerves. You only need 140 yards to clear the pond but you also can’t blast your driver due to a second pond short and right of the green. Recommended to play your 250 yard club to get in the fairway but short of the 2nd pond. There is room on the left of the fairway but OB on private property is on the right. Land in the fairway and then you need to focus on the tough approach shot.

The green is large and accepting but there is little to no room around the green so it is necessary to reach get on the green or be short. Only 10 yards of room behind the green, 15 yards right of the green and another 10 yards left of the green. Weeds and a creek run along the left and backside of the hole. Private property on a cow pasture to the right of the hole. This hole has the most trouble throughout the entire course.

Clubhouse Pick: 1

Best Par 3 - #17 126 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

Forced carry over the pond. An extremely deep bunker runs along the left side sandwiched between the pond and the green. Marsh and thick weeds to the right of the hole. Green is slightly elevated so play the hole an extra 5 yards off the tee. Green slopes downhill and from left to right. Gauge your distance and you will have a decent chance at birdie.

Clubhouse Pick: 5

Best Par 4 - #9 360 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A very tempting hole to attempt to drive the green. From the tips, front of the green plays 314 yards. The risk is the pond and creek that sits in front and to the right of the green. Must bomb 260 yards to clear the pond. Make sure you hit straight or with a baby draw if attempting to clear or it will only take one bad bounce to end up in the hazard. Left side is wide open with no danger whatsoever. Green is very deep and narrow. Slopes uphill in the front, downhill from the middle to the backside creating a ball collection area if you hit too deep. The Utah Golf Guy went for the green, hitting a slide fade forcing it to take one bounce into the hazard. A chip and 1-putt from just off the green saved my par.

Clubhouse Pick: 8

Best Par 5 - #6 513 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

The only true par 5 on the course (yardage-wise) gets my nod for the best one on the course. OB field on the left side. Right side is wide open except for one deep fairway bunker. If you miss, miss right. Fairway is very wide. A large, deep bunker protects the front right side of the green. Marsh and a creek run along the whole back and right side of the green so do not overshoot the approach. One of the more undulating greens on the course with a false front on the left. Recommended to play from the left side of the fairway for a chance to run up your second shot to the green, sliding past the front right bunker.

Clubhouse Pick: 14
