COURSE SUMMARY

Valley View Golf Course is located in Layton, Utah. This 18 hole track offers a championship course for a public course price. The course offers views of both the Salt Lake Valley (hence the name) as well as scenic vistas of the Wasatch Mountains.

The course is in FANTASTIC shape, and the beauty of the course is only amplified if played in the fall with the leaves changing colors. Valley View has great variety with elevated tee boxes, water hazards, bunkers, dogleg fairways and large, rolling greens. The front nine is the better track but the back nine is no slouch either. This course is recommended to all golfers!

Course Conditions

One of the better maintained courses in the state. The fairways were cross-cut and mowed to perfection. I don’t remember seeing a single dead spot on either the fairways or the greens. The greens were large, smooth, quick and beautiful. These played like championship greens. The rough was thick in some places and thin in others (typical of early fall). The bunkers played nice with maybe a touch too much sand for my liking. Tee boxes were level and in good shape.

Extras

The clubhouse is outdated but is spacious and functional on the inside. The staff was cordial on the phone but a little robotic and entitled in the clubhouse. Practice facilities at Valley View are AMAZING! Driving range is large, well-maintained and has a variety of yardage markers to help gauge your distance. Next to the range was a large chipping green with a nice sand bunker to practice from. Just beyond this chipping green were two separate chipping greens (no bunkers) that were not mowed all the way down but were still great to practice wedge play. Just off to the other side of the range is a large putting green with various holes and slopes. A second putting green, sitting next to the #1 and #10 tee boxes, is humongous and with HUGE slopes to practice on. One of the better practice facilities in the state!

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #12 Par 3 227 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Multiple holes are deserving of this award but the most memorable for me, the long par 3. Elevated tee box into an extremely deep green (36 yards). Fairway slopes from right to left with a hill on the left side. Green is protected by four sand bunkers and the hole gives a cathedral feel with trees horseshoeing the backside of the green. Green slopes uphill. Bring enough club to give yourself a chance. Landing anywhere on the green is a good shot. 15 feet from the hole is a great shot!

Clubhouse Pick: 1 or 12

Most Beautiful - #1 Par 4 462 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

The view from the elevated tee box is stunning. Water on the left, dogleg left fairway bends at the lake. Sparse trees line the right side and a fairway bunker is strategically placed on the right if you hit through the fairway. Green is wide open on the left side, little to no room on the right. Green is deep and undulating. Miss the green to the right, you are either in the bunker or in the trees.

Clubhouse Pick: 17

Birdie Time - #14 Par 4 396 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Fairway slopes uphill, then back down and finally back up towards the green. Fairway is quite wide and slopes from right to left. Green is protected by two bunkers on the right side but the left side is very accessible. Green is deep and slopes aggressively uphill with a false back on the left side.

Clubhouse Pick: 9

Likely Bogey - #3 Par 4 437 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

A beautiful, elevated tee shot with fantastic views of the mountains. The tee shot looks more intimidating than it actually plays. Left side is an automatic lose ball so aim for the right center with a slight draw. Tee shot is downhill with approach shot going back uphill. Dogleg left creates a blind green from the tee box. Due to the elevated green, must add 10 yards to your club on the approach. Green is deep and has a lone bunker on the left side. Keep your ball out of the left side (OB) and right side (trees) and you will have a shot at walking away with a par.

Clubhouse Pick: 3

Best Par 3 - #7 194 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Another beautiful par 3, that was in the running for “most beautiful” hole. From the tee box, the mountains seem to be right on top of you. This hole requires a relatively straight tee shot. Left side is a sloping hill filled with bushes and trees that will easily gobble up the ball. On the right side are heavy trees. The entire right side is a pond that reaches 5 yards into the front of the green. Two bunkers on the left side and one behind the hole. Green is about level from the tee box so the yardage is accurate. Green slopes aggressively uphill. Put the ball on the green or your scorecard might suffer.

Clubhouse Pick: 12

Best Par 4 - #15 449 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Beautiful hole that requires commitment to the strategy that you choose. Fairway slopes downhill so you will need to be careful of the pond that sits just 300 yards from the back tees. For big hitters who can control their driver, aim for the left edge of the pond and draw it 5-10 yards. This will take the pond out of play and your approach will be less stressful. For regular hitters, it is recommended to layup 20-30 yards short of the pond. However, this will force you to go over the 100 yard long pond to reach the green. Green is very wide and slopes uphill. One bunker is on the left side of the green.

Clubhouse Pick: 15

Best Par 5 - #17 535 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

One of my favorite holes on the entire course. Starts out with an elevated tee shot into the majestic backdrop of the mountains. A large tree is planted on the right side of the fairway, aim 5 yards to the left for the perfect tee shot. The 2ndand 3rd shots are all uphill so make sure you club up. A large butterfly shaped bunker sits to the short left of the green and another bunker is 15 yards behind it. Green is very deep and slopes aggressively. Must land below the hole to not 3-putt.
