COURSE SUMMARY

The mountain course of the Wasatch Golf course is located in Midway, Utah just a few miles from Heber City. Located on the Wasatch Mountain State Park, these 36 holes are an absolute dream to play. The Mountain Course was completed 30 years after the Lake Course and plays at an elevation of 6,000 feet. The front nine travels up the mountain (over 2 miles up) and the back nine brings you back down the mountain. Due to this setup, there is no nine hole option and every golfer needs to have a motorized cart (no walking).

The mountain course plays shorter but tougher than the Lake Course. While both are beautiful, I much prefer the huge elevation changes over water so for my dollar, the Mountain Course takes the cake. These huge elevation changes off the tee and on approaches make you trust your yardages and force you to focus on each and every shot.

EXTRAS

The clubhouse is nice and functional. The staff were cordial and helpful in the clubhouse and on the course but unfortunately were a little impatient and frustrated on the phone. Although, the experience was much better than the first time I played the Lake Course. The practice facilities were great with a large putting green in front of the clubhouse and a well-maintained driving range.

For a mountain course, the conditions were fantastic. A few tee boxes were uneven but the fairways and greens played and looked beautiful. A few bunkers were a little light with sand but most of them played as expected. The views on this course are out of this world! While the course is beautiful in the spring and summer, the real treat is playing this course with the changing leaves in the fall. In fact, this course made it on the Utah Golf Guy’s TOP 5 MOST BEAUTIFUL COURSES IN THE FALL.

For the money, this course is a great value and they will even give you a few bucks off (re-round discount) if you play both courses in the same day. Midway is becoming one of the best golf destinations in the state, and the Mountain course is a big reason why.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #12 Par 5 635 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

While the yardage looks daunting, this hole plays much shorter. From tee to green, this hole plays straight downhill making it the most entertaining hole on the course. A fairway bunker sits on the left and the right side fairway is partially blind on the tee shot due to large trees and bushes poking in from the right side. Two bunkers sit on the front of the green and another large bunker plays behind the hole. Green is deep and inviting on the approach shot. A small ridge runs across the backside of the green creating a separate shelf on the back right.

Beautiful hole from tee to green with views for days. After the tee shot, there is no such thing as a level shot as the fairway slopes aggressively downhill down to the green.

Clubhouse Pick: 12

Most Beautiful - #6 Par 4 362 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Double Bogey

The complete opposite of the signature hole, as #6 plays straight uphill from tee to green. The tee shot is tight with trees (hazards) lining both sides of the fairway leaving little room for error. This hole almost makes you layup on the tee to make sure you keep it in play, but playing an iron off the tee leaves you with a LONG approach shot due to the elevation change. The approach shot will need at least an extra club to reach the green. Green is large and round all around. A large slope runs along the back third creating an upper shelf on the backside. In the running for the Most Likely Bogey hole as well

Clubhouse Pick: 16

Birdie Time - #11 Par 4 290 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

A fun and quirky Par 4 that is straight up the hill, hitting over a ravine. Beautiful views from the tee box and looking back from the green. Plenty of room left of the fairway and more room on the right than what appears from the tee box (I hit a provisional thinking that I had hit my first drive into abyss on the right but my ended up 10 yards short of the green on the right side). If you can drive the ball straight, big hitters can reach the green off the tee. Green is protected by two frontside bunkers, one on each side leaving an opening in the middle. Green is shallow but extremely wide. Green has a small false front and everything slopes uphill.

 Clubhouse Pick: 1

Likely Bogey - #15 Par 4 366 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Hole #6 was in the running as well but the “Likely Bogey” hole goes to #15. The fairway slopes down and then backup towards the green making a level second shot rare and forcing you to gauge the correct distance. More room to the left of the fairway than to the right. Groves of trees pinch in on both sides making the tee shot appear scarier than it actually is. Green is protected by a front right bunker. Green is undulated with a large ridge on the back left creating a separate shelf. The elevated green is blind on the approach shot, leaving you with only the flagstick for a target.

Clubhouse Pick: 7

Best Par 3 - #2 184 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

Beautiful Par 3 that looks like it belongs on the Lake Course. Trees abound everywhere on this hole and a small, but beautiful pond is located in front of the tee boxes. Bunkers on the front right and back left of the green. Green plays a few yards uphill from the tee box so play the hole an extra 5 yards if possible.

With no one around, the Utah Golf Guy hit two shots off the tee as I did not have a chance to warmup. The first landed and stuck two feet from the pin, the second hit the flagstick and spun back four feet from the pin. Wish I could say I did the same for the other Par 3’s on the course.

Clubhouse Pick: 2

Best Par 4 - #3 393 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A dangerous hole from the tee box, as the trees and hazard area on the right can potentially come into play on every shot. Fairway slopes uphill and from left down to right. Left fairway is the ideal play. One of the best approach shots on the course, playing straight downhill to the green. If you end up too far to the right on the drive, the grove of trees on the right pinch in and may create a blind approach shot. A gully runs between the approach shot and the green. Bunker on the left and hazard penalty is just five yards off the green on the right. Green is narrow and deep, sloping uphill. Playing this hole from the right side raises the difficulty of this hole in spades. Stay left and you can score easily on this hole.

Clubhouse Pick: 3

Best Par 5 - #14 529 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Another downhill Par 5. Trees line both sides of the fairway and appear to pinch in from just off the tee boxes but open up once the fairway starts. The fairway plays slightly to the left but the green and flagstick can still be seen from the tee box. From 150 yards, the approach shot plays uphill. Going for the green in two is risky, due to two groves of trees pinching into the fairway 60 yards short of the green. The large green slopes uphill with a ridge on the left side that brings everything back to the center. Bunker on the back right and another on the front left.
