COURSE SUMMARY

Hubbard Memorial Golf Course is a private golf course located on the Hill Air Force Base. The course was originally designed as a nine hole track by Stanley W. Hadden in 1961. The second nine was completed the following year.

Someone in my four-some mentioned that quality of a military based golf course depends on if the Colonel plays golf. If so, the greens and fairways will be immaculate. If not, the course will suffer. Safe to say that those in charge on the base sure love their golf. The course was in fantastic shape including the most complex greens I have had the chance of playing on.

Trees run throughout the course and the famous greens are ginormous with different breaks and slopes on every hole. My best advice? Due to the quick greens, you must leave yourself with uphill putts to limit the potential 3-putts awaiting you on each hole.

When asking the clubhouse what the signature hole was, they stated that the greens were the most memorable feature of the course, not a specific hole. The Utah Golf Guy concurs. This is a must-play course for anyone who loves high quality golf.

Specifics

The clubhouse is beautiful on the inside. Plenty of space and modern with a great layout. The outside was a little boring looking like a common building instead of a majestic clubhouse. The staff were great, both on the phone and in person. Practice facilities were decent. The practice putting green is large and resembles the greens on the course with multiple contours. The driving range was disappointing. Plenty of space for plenty of golfers but you are hitting into a field without any grass.

This is one of the more difficult courses in the state. During the first 6 holes, the wind was absolutely hounding causing havoc on shots going from tee to green. Once the wind subsided, these large, sloping greens took over the round. The greens are quick, undulated and open to a 3-putt from anywhere. If you are a golfer looking for a challenge, Hubbard Memorial is the course for you.

Conditions

The greens were in immaculate shape. Rolled quick but were smooth, well-maintained and beautiful to the eye. Fairways were on the verge of being great with a few major dead spots on a couple of holes. The rough is thick and the trees line every fairway. The bunkers were in good shape but with a tad too much sand for my liking. Tee boxes were in perfect shape. The grounds crew should be very proud of the golf course!

Signature Hole - #10 Par 4 405 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

When I asked the staff what their signature hole is, they answered, “We don’t really have one. The greens are the signature at Hubbard.” That shows you how great these greens really are. But, the Utah Golf Guy has a job to do, and the most memorable hole was definitely #10. A huge, elevated tee box into a relatively skinny fairway lined with trees on both sides. Fairway slopes from right to left so any shot on the right side will end up in the center or left side fairway. Green is slightly uphill for the approach. Green is deep and slopes aggressively uphill.

Clubhouse Pick: 5

Most Beautiful - #17 Par 3 151 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Short but beautiful par 3 with majestic trees and mountains in the background. Tee box is relatively flat to the green. Trees line the fairway but the hole opens up a little on the right side. Green has a minor false front and a valley running through the middle. If you can land on the green there is a good chance your ball will get centered on the green. Gauge your distance correctly and stay below the hole.

Clubhouse Pick: 5 or 9

Birdie Time - #18 Par 4 360 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Tight shot off the tee box but the fairway opens. Fairway slopes downhill from right to left so landing on the left side is recommended. Trees line the entire right side of the fairway and could leave you with a difficult approach from that side. Approach shot is slightly uphill from the 150 marker. Green is deep with a false front. Green slopes aggressively uphill so leave your approach below the hole.

Clubhouse Pick: 17

Likely Bogey - #7 Par 4 454 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Long par 4 that plays uphill making it play even longer. Dogleg right but due to large pine trees on the corner it is risky to try and cut the corner. Approach shot is slightly downhill to the green making your footing most likely uneven. Green is deep and slopes uphill. The green has a valley running through the middle from front to back.

Clubhouse Pick: 10

Best Par 3 - #13 217 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

A beautiful, elevated tee shot into an accessible green. Green protected by a left side bunker. Green is deep, wide and slopes uphill.

Clubhouse Pick: 13 or 17

Best Par 4 - #4 387 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Double Bogey

Course knowledge would have helped on this course as I foolishly played driver off the tee and ended up in the right trees. 3 wood or a driving iron is the recommended play off the tee, just aim for the 150 marker. This hole is a dogleg left with a fun, elevated approach shot into the green. Green is protected by bunkers on the front right and front left. Both bunkers are ginormous so gauge your direction. A valley runs 50 yards short of the hole so if you miss the green you will be chipping uphill.  Green is relatively small, has a false front and slopes aggressively uphill so land below the hole.

Clubhouse Pick: 10

Best Par 5 - #1 548 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

The best tee shot on the entire course. Huge, elevated tee box into a sloping fairway can result in some monster drives. Trees are sparse on the left of the fairway and much thicker and dangerous on the right side. The fairway slopes from left to right, so left fairway is ideal. Approach shot is uphill staring around the 175 yard marker. A mound on the right side of the green can potentially dump shots from that side back onto the green. Green slopes aggressively uphill starting 1/3 of the way up and downhill the first 1/3. Green is extremely deep. Big hitters will have a decent shot for birdie.

Clubhouse Pick: 5
