Course Summary

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course was the first golf course developed by the City of St George in 1965. This 9-hole par-34 course sits on beautiful sandstone cliffs and is lined by hundreds of Cottonwoods, Mondale Pines, Mesquite and many other trees throughout. The course is short and walkable coming in at 2733 yards from the tips. In fact, the clubhouse projects that over 60% of the golfers here choose to walk their round. The elevation is about 2500 feet.

When planning out my St. George golf trip, this course was originally considered a filler or warm-up round for the other courses I had planned. I was dead wrong. This course is absolutely beautiful and diverse, with EVERY hole being unique and memorable. Dixie Red Hills  is one of the best values in Utah and a highly recommended course for all types of golfers.

Specifics

Dixie Red Hill’s clubhouse was recently remodeled and looks fantastic from the outside, with an overhanging deck for spectators highlighting the renovation. The inside is small but is clean and inviting. The two putting greens have good size and are in great shape. One sits on top of a red hill bluff. The driving range is nice but small and only allows for irons.

Tee boxes and Fairways

The tee boxes were in great shape, green and cut perfectly. All tee box divots were filled with seed/sand mixture. The fairways were overall in great shape. Every hole had a few brown spots but overall the fairways were in great shape and allowed for ideal iron shots.

Greens

The greens were in fantastic shape, giving a consistent roll on each putt. The greens are fast and sloping, requiring focus and concentration on every shot.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole: #5 Par 4 355 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Hole #5 was the most memorable for me. With a little course knowledge, this hole can easily be birdied. It may look tempting to cut the corner but the smart play is to layup past the tree on the dogleg left corner and the bunker on the right side. Getting past these landmarks sets you up perfectly for a light wedge into the green. Fairway goes downhill and the tee box is elevated at least 25 feet above the fairway. From the tee box, it is impossible to see the flag or even a landing spot on the fairway so aim for the right edge of the largest tree on the left side.

Clubhouse Pick: #6

Most Beautiful: #4 Par 3 148 Yards

The short par 3 is absolutely beautiful. Red rock mountains surround the backside of the green and give a cathedral feel. The green is uphill from the tee box and the back right of the green has a waterfall style slope to it. It is essential to gauge your distance on this hole or its beauty will become quite ugly on your scorecard.

Clubhouse Pick: #4

Birdie Time: #1 Par 4 306 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

The first hole is a short, driveable Par 4. The fairway is uphill but if you are able to carry your drive you will be able to roll up onto the green. For big hitters, the play is to shape your drive from right to left. If laying up, hit at least 225 yards for a clear approach shot to the green. A bunker collects balls on the right side, and on the left another bunker hugs the left front of the green. For those trying to cut the corner on the left side, a huge red rock protects the far left of the green.

The green is two tiered with a huge slope running through the middle splitting the left side (high side) and the right side (low side). Make sure you gauge the distance to land on the correct tier.

Clubhouse Pick: #1, #3 or #9

Likely Bogey: #2 Par 3 199 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Honestly, I would not consider any hole at Dixie Red Hills all that difficult so by default, I will give this award to the longest Par 3 on the course. The green might look slightly uphill but it is about even with the tee shot. The green is relatively flat with a slight right to left slope.

Clubhouse Pick: #2

Best Par 3: #6 143 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Hole #6 was the runner-up to the most beautiful hole so we will slot it as the best Par 3 on the course. It requires a simple 143 yard carry over a beautiful, crystal blue lake. The green sits right below the newly renovated clubhouse. The green is very wide and deeper than it looks from the tee box. The green is undulated with a false back if you hit too far.

Clubhouse Pick: #6

Best Par 4: #1 306 Yards

Best Par 5: #3 516 Yards

By default, as the only Par 5 on the course, this hole wins the Best Par 5 distinction. Thankfully, this Par 5 is fantastic and extremely unique. The green is blind from the elevated tee box due to a semi-circle fairway that curves around imposing sand stone cliffs. To reach in two, it is imperative to hit past the left dogleg to have a shot or even visual of the green.

The green is extremely deep and slopes from front to back. A bunker sits 20 yards on the right collecting anyone attempting to reach in 2. Another bunker sits on the left side of the green but is essentially out of play and just for show.

Clubhouse Pick: #3
