Course Summary

*** The course is undergoing major construction so my review will focus on areas not affected by this…

Welcome to the East Bay golf review. The views of the Lone Peak Mountains in the background coupled with water on almost every hole truly is a sight to see. Water is in play on 14 of the 18 holes making each tee shot quite nerve racking. The majority of these tee shots require a forced carry over water and onto the fairway. It is essential to hit a straight ball and to not test the water’s edge. If your tee shot is not accurate you could very well empty your ball bag quickly.  A lack of trees along the fairways take away from some of the beauty and difficulty of the course but the proposed construction improvements should eventually help with this.

The course hosts the annual Novell Provo Open each spring. This is a big deal in Provo and the course cleans and puts the course in great shape for the event. According to locals, once the Open is complete the course is let go and A LOT of trash is found on each pond and marshy location. This was quite apparent in October.

The course layout is truly confusing. Finding hole #4, #6, #13 and #18 were near impossible without asking directions from the local golfers. To get to the #6 tee box you need to cut across the #3 tee box. The layout is not ideal and is very frustrating for a first time East Bay golfer.

Specifics

Fairways – Not in good shape. The majority of driveable holes had at least 1 large brown spot. Dead spots are found throughout each fairway and different colors of green/brown line the fairways.

Greens – Fast and sloping. Must play short on each approach shot or it will roll to the backside of the green. The greens were in much better shape than the fairways and rolled true.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #4 Par 4 480 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A few could have been chosen such as Hole #1, Hole #10 or even Hole #13 but, in my opinion, this long Par 4 is the hole that I remember the most. A blind tee shot over swamp, sand bunkers and yes, even more water. Hit it left and your ball is swimming. Too far right and you are in thick grass with a long approach shot. To clear the bunker on the left side you must carry your tee shot 270 yards. Go right and short of the bunker and you are looking at a long iron into the green. Beautiful and challenging hole.

Most Beautiful - #13 Par 5 541 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Water on both sides of the tee shot, water on the left of the approach shot. If you can put your driver on the fairway you have a shot at reaching in 2. Left on your approach means water; right means trees or into a canal. 2 bunkers guard the large green in front. This hole is beautifully laid out with enough risk/reward to double bogey or birdie.

Birdie Time - #12 Par 5 508 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

A short par 5 that has water on both sides of the fairway. If you hit a decent drive the fairway opens up in the middle and allows for a shot at reaching in 2. If flag is on the left side of the green it is advantageous to attack the flag. One small bunker guarding the green on the right. Get on the green and roll one in for Birdie!

Likely Bogey - #8 Par 4 452 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

The longest par 4 on the course has, you guessed it, water everywhere. A pond runs the entirety of the tee box all the way to the green on the left side. A small pond is also found on the front right of the green. A ditch also runs 50 yards short of the green leaving you with a nervous approach shot. A fun hole that could easily add some strokes to your scorecard.

Best Par 3 - #3 183 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

This selection was an easy one. All the other Par 3’s on the course are forgettable but this one  is quite memorable. Must carry over 150 yards to clear the water and 165 yards to reach the front of the green. Small bunker on the front left and a large bunker on the right make accuracy vital off the tee box to hit this heart shaped green.
