Course Summary

Mt Ogden Golf Course sits on the East Bench of the Wasatch Mountains. This course is in contention for the most beautiful golf course in Utah. Lush, green, mature trees throughout the course. Ginormous elevated tee and approach shots. Well-manicured tee boxes, fairways, sand bunkers and greens. The course is in fantastic shape and plays how a championship course should play. The views throughout the course magnify the beauty of the mountains, city and valley below.

The difficulty of this course depends entirely how you hit the ball off the tee. On almost every dogleg hole you can either cut the corner leaving yourself with less than 100 yards, or you can fly the ball over the trees and land on or near the green. But, you need to be able to hit the ball long and controlled. That is a big BUT, because if you can’t control your driver you will have A LOT of lost balls in the trees. Landing in the fairway will allow you to have a decent shot for birdie on every hole. Course knowledge is a huge advantage on each tee shot.

The only knock that I have on this course is the stretch of holes, 15-17. Each hole is absolutely beautiful and stunning on its own, with elevated tee shots into severe dogleg left fairways. While each play a little differently (15 can be reached off the tee, 16 you will need to layup to the fairway and 17 you can hit a full driver with a high draw), I am not a fan of the same dogleg layout three holes in a row. I would prefer that these holes were spread out to give the course a little more variety throughout this portion of the round. Again, very small complaint (like complaining that you received a T-bone instead of a porterhouse steak).

Conditions

The greens played pretty quick and generally broke away from the mountain. Greens were in great shape, tiered and accepting to every approach shot. Fairways were wide, green and allowed for the ball to sit up each time. Sand bunkers look and feel how bunkers should. Clubhouse was unique and functional. The staff in the clubhouse and on the phone were good but the groundskeeper on the course elevated our entire experience. The excitement and pride that he had for his course was second to none. He gave us insider tips on each hole and praised each and every shot we hit (regardless of how average they actually were). Kudos to this man and the work he is doing to promote this beautiful golf course.

The practice facilities are pretty poor for such a nice course. Only one putting green sits next to the number nine green. This green is small and doesn’t offer a good variety to test different shots. The driving range is irons only and is normally closed to the public. I was told by the staff that the range is only available when the course pro is giving lessons.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #7 Par 4/5 471 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

The toughest and most entertaining hole on the course. Small opening from the tee boxes disguises how wide the fairway opens up. A ridge runs across the middle of the fairway and descends gradually and then aggressively down to the green from the 215 yard marker. Red stakes line both fairways so make sure you land it in the short grass. Fairway starts wide and then narrows all the way down to the hole.

Two tiered green, upper tier on the back left and lower tier on the front right. Ridge runs across the middle so gauge your distance correctly or you will be inviting a 3-putt. Green slopes aggressively from right to left. No harm in taking one extra club for the approach.

Clubhouse Pick: 7

Most Beautiful - #16 Par 4 394 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

A multitude of holes could lay claim to this award (#2, #7, #15, or #17) but we will go with #16. Another elevated tee box into a huge dogleg left, the tee shot will play psychological games with you as only a portion of the fairway is visible. Trees line the left and right of the teebox, forcing a narrow opening towards the fairway. If attempting to reach the green from the tee, don’t. Bryson Dechambeau might have problems reaching this hole from 347 yards (straight line from tee to green). Play whatever you can off the tee to leave you with 140 yards left to the green. From the tips, this is your 250 yard club. Make sure that you hit it long enough and to the right side of the fairway to get past the dogleg corner on the left or you will be left with a blind approach shot. From the 150 yard marker, the approach is level to the green. From inside the 150 yard marker to the green is a large valley in between.

Green is deep and slopes uphill, especially on the frontside. Another two-tiered green with very little room behind it, so don’t go long. Views from the tee box and from the green are spectacular.

Clubhouse Pick: 6

Birdie Time - #12 Par 3 112 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

The shortest and simplest hole on the course. Shot is slightly downhill to the green. Protected by a tiny bunker in the front and one on the left. Green is small and slopes downhill. Creek runs across the fairway 50 yards short of the hole and will not come into play. Room on the right side. Little to no room behind the green.

The Utah Golf Guy thought he had his second career hole in one. Playing a 60 degree lob wedge, the ball landed left of the hole and slowly meandered towards the pin. Finished 5 inches directly in front of the hole but from my angle it looked right on target. Full disclosure, I may have forgotten golf etiquette as I screamed “GET IN, GET IN!!!” as loud as I could. Maybe next time…

Clubhouse Pick: 2 or 15

Likely Bogey - #17 Par 4 461 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

The last in the trio of severe dogleg lefts (#18 is not as severe as 15, 16 and 17). This is the longest of the dogleg Par 4’s so cutting the corner is near impossible. Just a speck of the fairway can be seen from the tee box but there is more room on the right side than what appears. Driver can be played off the tee box (from the tips), just make sure the drive is relatively straight or you will be OB on the left side. Approach shot plays slightly downhill. Can’t miss the approach to the left. That side is guarded by two bunkers, cart path and heavily wooded trees.

Green is very skinny and deep, possibly the deepest green on the course. Green slopes gently uphill. In the running for most beautiful hole as well. Missing left on either the drive or the approach will put a high number on the scorecard.

Clubhouse Pick: 7

Best Par 3 - #5 178 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

A tight, intimidating tee shot in between trees on both the left and right sides. Green plays just a touch uphill from the tee shot. Bunkers surround the green, two on the left and one on the right. Green is two tiered; upper tier on the back and lower tier in the front. Must land on the correct tier or you will 3-putt. Green slopes from right to left.

Clubhouse Pick: 8

Best Par 4 - #2 328 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

The Utah Golf Guy loves elevated tee boxes, blind tee shots and reachable par 4’s. #2 checks all of these boxes (#15 was a close second for best par 4).  Elevated tee box into a dogleg right, blind view from tee to green. Middle of the fairway has a large mound that descends all the way down to the green. Long hitters can reach the green with the right angle, shorter hitters can layup and with the runout can roll close to the green. The Utah Golf guy flew the green but went up and down for birdie.

Green is wide and deep on the left side. Green slopes aggressively uphill. Fun risk/reward shot from the tee box.

Clubhouse Pick: 13 or 17

Best Par 5 - #6 491 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Another elevated tee shot into a dogleg right from the tee and then a dogleg left to the green. Short Par 5 that plays shorter than the yardage due to the elevation change. The Utah Golf Guy hit a perfect drive and hit the overhanging power lines above, so be aware. More trouble on the left than on the right side. A mound also lines the right side of the fairway, funneling all shots back to the middle.

Fairway gets very narrow around the 150 yards marker. A creek runs across the fairway 15 yards in front of the green making a touch decision whether to attempt reaching in two or laying up. The green is very wide but narrow making a long approach shot very difficult, easing the decision to layup. Green is two tiered and slopes from right to left downhill. No room behind the hole so gauge your distance correctly on the approach.

Clubhouse Pick: 4
