Course Summary

Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club is a private country club located in St George. The course is open to members only and guests who stay at the Inn at Entrada. The course is located in a top ranked retirement community and due to the area’s desert climate will have sunshine for over 300 days a year. This makes Entrada the number one rated year-round golf course in Utah.

Specifics

The course layout is phenomenal! Such great variety squeezed into 18 holes. Elevated tee shots, variety of streams and ponds, red rock outcroppings and one of the most unique 3-hole stretch in all of Utah. This stretch is aptly named the “Devil’s Triangle” due to the black lava rocks surrounding each fairway from tee to green. Starting with #15, the Devil’s Triangle is a test of accuracy, courage and skill. 95% of all wayward shots in the lava field will be lost forever with a small percentage of lucky golfers having their ball bounce back into the fairway. These three holes will be an experience you will not soon forget.

The clubhouse at Entrada is immaculate. Unique design and host to the pro shop, snack shop, restaurants, fitness & spa and a beautiful space for weddings and special events. The outside is just as grand with a towering waterfall cascading into a beautiful pond down below.

The practice facilities are exactly what you would expect from a private country club. Fully stocked driving range with plenty of room for multiple golfers. A grand putting green with various slopes and holes to practice from every distance. A separate chipping green next to the putting green. And yet another chipping green with a well-maintained bunker to practice sand play.

The staff was fantastic! Answered all of my questions on the phone while showing a lot of patience. In the pro shop and the snack bar the employees were helpful, knowledgeable and went out of their way to assist a first timer to their course. Most private country club employees seem a little stuffy but that was not the case for Entrada. The pace of play was a little slow due to the difficulty of the course. Too often the group in front or our own group would spend time on almost every hole looking for a ball or two. The delays weren’t horrible but our foursome did finish our round in 4 hours and 45 minutes, with quite a few holes waiting at the tee box.

Conditions

The condition of the course was extremely disappointing and affected not only the conditions grade but also the fun and value grade. Let’s start with the good. The tee boxes were in fantastic shape and the sand bunkers were flawless and played how a PGA level course would play. The water features (with one exception that will be explained below) were great and brought a lot of tranquility and beauty to the course.

Now the bad. The majority of the fairways and undulated greens were in horrendous shape with colossal dead spots on both. The foursome that I played with stated that the year before the course was in PRISTINE shape. The group discussed the possibility of a fungus getting a hold of the course this year. The healthy parts of the fairway and rough played great but I had two specific shots, in the middle of the fairway, that felt like I was playing on dirt. Very disappointing to see such a beautiful course have such poor playing conditions. The water throughout the course looked stunning but one of my favorite driving holes (hole #2) was void of water on the front right side fairway. I hope to come back next year and see the course in better condition.

*** I did get some outside information from a source that Entrada is planning to shut down the front nine soon so that they can remedy these holes. Once complete they would shut down the back nine and do the same. The rumor is that they are letting the course conditions go a bit until these are fixed. No official word from Entrada but this seems a plausible reason for the poor conditions of the course

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #16 Par 5 571 Yards "No Way Out"

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Tough pick between the three lava holes but I’ll go with the Par 5. #16 is a double dogleg that features an intimidating tee shot with more lava rock visible than fairway. Precision on the drive and second shot are much more important than distance. A wayward shot into the lava will spell doom on the scorecard. Might be hundreds of lost balls in the lava rocks on this hole alone. Two frontside bunkers protect the left and right of the green. Green is the widest on the entire course. Every shot will test your nerves until it lands in the cup.

Clubhouse Pick: 15/16/17 “Devil’s Triangle”

Most Beautiful - #2 Par 4 399 Yards " Double Trouble"

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Although lacking water on the front pond, this hole is visually appealing. The tee shot is elevated and you must carry the waterless pond off the tee if hitting a wood. Choose your shot path carefully. The more right you hit the ball, the easier the approach shot will be but go too far right and you are in the hazard. Classic risk/reward. Once over the first pond, the fun continues. Another forced carry over water on the left side with a bail out area to the right of the green. Peninsula green that is the 2nd deepest on the course (#6 is the deepest). The back half of the green slopes away towards the water hazard. The hole is beautiful throughout but the true beauty is witnessed from the 3rd tee box looking back at the wonderful layout.

Clubhouse Pick: 15

Birdie Time - #7 Par 4 363 Yards "Pinpointe"

Utah Golf Guy score - 3-putt Bogey (from 18 feet)

Beautiful hole with water all along the left side, a creek on the far right and another pond front right of the green. The fairway is quite wide, just stay away from the fairway bunker just short of the pond on the right side. Recommended to layup off the tee to a distance you are comfortable with. Green is one of the smaller putting surfaces on the course. Keep out of the water and sand and you will have a decent shot at birdie.

Clubhouse Pick: 5

Likely Bogey - #17 Par 4 432 Yards "Devil's Hideaway"

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

The final hole of the dreaded “Devil’s Triangle” is also the toughest. Lava lines both sides of the hole, making it imperative to land your drive on grass. Must have a big drive to reach this dogleg left. A boulder sits in the middle of the fairway giving this hole an extra dose of fun. The fairway gets pinched down by rock and bunkers near the front of the green. A precision approach shot is necessary for par. Green is heart shaped and quite undulating. Par here is a great score.

Clubhouse Pick: 17

Best Par 3 - #8 211 Yards "Tortoise Lair"

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A beautiful, elevated tee shot into a descending, large green. Water on the left should not come into play but is mesmerizing with a waterfall trickling into a pond.  Two bunkers protect the front side. Room to the front and right of the bunkers. Green is very wide. The only flat portion of the green is in the left center.

Clubhouse Pick: 8

Best Par 4 - #15 341 Yards "Mercy"

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

The beginning hole of the Devil’s Triangle. This hole is the definition of a risk/reward tee shot. Big hitters can attempt to drive the green, others can layup using a long or mid-iron. Lava rocks are everywhere, including around each tee box and on both sides of the fairway. For those laying up, the fairway is wider than what appears on the tee. Bunker protects the front right side of the green. Depending on your tee shot, this could easily be a birdie or double bogey hole.

Clubhouse Pick: 15

Best Par 5 - #9 621 Yards "Prayermaker"

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

This hole plays every bit the yardage on the scorecard due to the uphill fairway on the drive. No need to layup as two full shots are required before the approach. This dramatic dogleg right is impossible to cut the corner due to the wide desert and trees on the right side and how narrow the fairway gets in the middle of this hole. Approach is downhill to a slightly elevated green. A small valley runs across the fairway just short of the green. One of the most undulating greens on the course makes this hole extremely difficult from tee to green.

Clubhouse Pick: 11
