Course Summary

El Monte Golf Course is a nine-hole layout located at the mouth of Ogden Canyon. This course features gentle terrain changes and mature trees throughout. A beautiful course that has matured well with age. While beautiful during the day, the real beauty of this course is witnessed at night with the sunset shimmering through the mountains and the trees. This course is highly recommended for all who are in the area.

Specifics

The clubhouse is fun. An extremely old style building that looms up and over the course on top of the hill. The pro shop is a little squished but the building is so unique and fun. The staff was a little stiff with me, even going as far as telling me they could not get me on the course. I had to tip my hand and let them know that I was reviewing the course. Only after they had this information, did he allow me to play the course. I did speak with the Golf Pro and he was great to talk with.

Driving range has everything that a golf course needs but is mats only. The one putting green is good, spacious and lets you practice all types of putts and chips.

Course conditions were decent overall but it had way too many dead spots on both the fairways and the greens. Most of the tee boxes were uneven as well. The rough played as expected and the bunkers looked and played nicely.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole - #1 Par 5 538 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

The lone Par 5 on the course is quite memorable. In the middle of the fairway lies two large Fremont Cottonwood trees. Big hitters can clear the trees, short to average hitters need to be careful to navigate your second shot to the sides. There is plenty of room to the right. Trees line the entire right side of the fairway. Elevated tee shot into a fairway with a huge valley running across. Approach is elevated, hitting down towards a relatively small green with no trouble whatsoever. Fun hole that you will not forget due to the Cottonwood trees and the elevated approach shot.

Clubhouse Pick: 1

Most Beautiful - #5 Par 4 320 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A unique and quirky hole with trees lining each side of the fairway and the green. About 90 yards short of the putting surface are three rock creeks that run across the fairway. These are all marked by red hazard poles and will force you to decide if you are going to layup or attempt to clear the dry creeks. While only 210 yards to clear from the back tees, the trees pinch into the fairway forcing the tee shot to be near perfect. A large willow tree sits along to the right of the green and will come into play if not careful on the second shot. The green is tucked away on the back left of the hole. The Utah Golf Guy’s advice is to layup your tee shot to the right side of the fairway, taking the overhanging branches on the left out of play. The green has a cathedral feel with thick trees hanging their branches over the green. Green is small but slopes aggressively uphill. This hole presents a lot of potential danger so make a plan and execute.

Clubhouse Pick: 1 or 7

Likely Bogey - #2 Par 4 387 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Fairly simple tee shot to a wide and slightly right to left fairway but the hole gets very tricky on the approach. The second shot is straight uphill with no visibility of the green. If lucky, you can see the top of the flagstick. The fairway is sloped so the left side will move every ball towards the center. The green is small and perfectly circular. No bunkers anywhere and there is plenty of room all around the green. For par, you will need to be familiar with this green or plan on getting it up and down for your four.

Clubhouse Pick: 2

Best Par 3 - #6 188 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Trees line the entire left side and a humongous tree to the right of the tee box has overhanging branches that will make you pause on the tee shot. A creek runs 20 yards short of the green across the fairway. Lots of room to the left and behind the green. Possibly the deepest green on the course.

Clubhouse Pick: 6

Best Par 4 - #3 369 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

A short, dogleg right off an elevated tee box. The layout does not allow you to hit through the dogleg so pull out a 3 wood or driving iron to leave yourself 135 yards to the middle of the green. Make sure you are far enough past the pine tree on the right side. Middle fairway will give you the best angle. Trees line the entire left side of the fairway and are out of bounds. Creek runs across the fairway, 25 yards short of the green.

The green, according to the local that I played with, was replaced about 2 years ago. The old green was well below the current green and would collect excess water which made it sopping wet. This new green is a big improvement. Green has a small ridge across the middle. Green does not hold the approach very well so attempt to land a few yards off the green and have it run up towards the flag with a low trajectory approach.
