Course Summary

When you think of high quality golf in the St George area, Green Spring Golf Course rarely comes to mind. After playing this course, the Utah Golf Guy is here to proclaim, Why not?!?!?!? This course is an absolute hidden gem and the Utah Golf Guy is here to endorse it to everyone. This course has so much natural beauty and variety that it seems you are playing 2 or 3 courses rolled into 1. Natural features of this course include natural desert springs, wetlands and a variety of bushes and trees including large cottonwoods. Green Spring offers incredible views of Pine Valley Mountain and Red Cliffs State Park.

Built in 1989 by Gene Bates, this is the course that opened the flood gates to quality golf courses in Southwest Utah. The two best holes, the Par 3 number 5 and Par 4 number 6 are two of the most memorable holes in the state. While not the only good holes, these two make this course one of the best values in St George.

Conditions

Overall, the conditions of the course were very good. The greens were actually in great shape but NOBODY fixes their ball marks on this course. I can’t remember a putt longer than 15 feet that I did not need to fix a ball divot in my line. The fairways allowed the ball to sit up nicely but had a few dead spots on occasion. Sand bunkers were in perfect condition and played as expected.

Clubhouse is functional and the practice facilities have everything you need to get prepared for your round. The one big knock on the course was the pace of play. They allowed a 5-some on the course directly ahead of our 3-some. After they allowed us to play through after the 5th hole, we ran into another 5-some! This should not be tolerated unless there is no one out on the course. This made our 18 hole round over 5 hours!

The pace of play is the only reason this course is scored relatively low. I cannot excuse two 5-somes out on the course on an already busy day.

Signature Hole - #5 Par 3 173 Yards "Bottomless Pit"

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Hands down, the biggest “wow” moment on this golf course is stepping onto the #5 tee box. Forced carry over a HUGE red rock ravine between the tee and the green. This hole will test your nerves and your play under pressure. Plenty of room behind and to the right of the green. Little to no room on the front left side. Make sure you hit enough club to land it on the green. A small bunker sits on the back right. Green is two-tiered with the high side on the back right.

 Clubhouse Pick: 5

Most Beautiful - #18 Par 5 502 Yards "Last Chance"

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Beautiful finishing hole that slopes downhill from tee to green. Dog leg right with a fairway bunker on the left side. The landing area on the fairway is wider than it looks on the left side. Desert brush lines both sides of the fairways all the way down to the hole. Fairway gets narrow 200 to 100 yards from the green and then widens a bit for the approach. Green is protected by a left side bunker and another little pot bunker behind the hole. A small valley sits between the end of the fairway and the green. Green is wide but shallow.

 Clubhouse Pick: 18

Birdie Time - #12 Par 4 311 Yards "Double Down"

Utah Golf Guy score - Birdie

A short Par 4 that comes with a bit of risk/reward. Big hitters can potentially reach the green but if you hit a poor shot, trouble awaits you. A beautiful hotel sits to left of the fairway and is protected by a large net. The largest bunker on the course (over 75 yards) sits on the right side and runs all the way up the right side of the green. The right side of the green will funnel everything back to the middle. Those who are aggressive could potentially have a tap in birdie. Those who play it safe should walk away with an easy two-putt par.

 Clubhouse Pick: 12

Likely Bogey - #6 Par 4 449 Yards "Devil's Gulch"

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Without question, this is the most diabolical hole on the course (hence the nickname Devil’s Gulch). Out of bounds left and a huge canyon ravine on the right. The fairway runs out 140 yards short of the green. The further left your tee shot ends up, the longer the forced carry over the canyon becomes. A perfect shot is right-center of the fairway as close as you can to the end. The canyon itself is 110 yards wide. The drop zone is on the other side of the canyon. The miss on the approach is to the right side. Little to no room in front or to the left. Green is very wide but shallow. A ridge runs through the entire green creating quite a bit of undulation. Directly behind the hole is a brave soul who owns a house without a net. I can’t imagine how many bladed shots on this hole could break some windows?!?!

 Clubhouse Pick: 6

Best Par 4 - #11 391 Yards "Marshland"

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

As the name suggests, this hole has a different feel than any other on the course. Water on the left and a large, beautiful pond all along the right side. A very small fairway opening on the left side so it is recommended to layup just short of the pond. Right-center of the fairway, 115 yards from the green is the perfect layup. The approach is all carry over the water onto a shallow but very wide green. Fun and beautiful hole.

 Clubhouse Pick: 1

Best Par 5 - #16 489 Yards "Gambler"

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

Green Spring has some beautiful Par 5’s, but the #16 “Gambler” is my favorite. As the name suggests, this hole is the ultimate risk-reward on the course. Dogleg right with various penalties on that side. Including six fairway bunkers and OB in the form of a ravine. If you can cut the corner, you will have to decide whether to go for the green in two. The fairway runs out 50 yards from the green creating a forced carry over the same ravine that runs along the entirety of the hole. This is by far the toughest green on the course with four separate shelves and various slopes and ridges throughout. It is vital to land on the appropriate shelf if you want a chance for birdie. This hole could be a birdie hole and could just as easily give you a triple-bogey. Every shot is important and will take precision to win big on this gambling hole.
