COURSE SUMMARY
Homestead Golf Club is one of five courses in the golf centric town of Midway, Utah. While not as well-known as the other courses in the city, this track has a lot to offer. An abundance of water and mature trees, this course is fun and memorable.
Let’s start off with the bad. The phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” comes to mind with Homestead Golf Club. As far as first impressions go, this course was highly disappointing. Literally, driving to the club house through the parking lot was extremely confusing. Signage is minimal and finding the tiny, outdated club house was difficult. Even the parking lot seemed unorganized and incomplete. The practice putting green next to the opening hole is one of the worst in the state. Three holes, dead grass and no maintenance at all on the fringe. The driving range was also very underwhelming. Small, poorly maintained and a bit away from the clubhouse.
Conditions
Seeing these “first impression” items was worrisome but once I was off the tee on the first hole, I was pleasantly surprised. The course is beautiful! Trees, ponds, creeks and natural vegetation are sprinkled throughout the course. While not quite the mountain views of its MIdway golf course brothers, the course does have a certain charm and allure to it. The fairways were well manicured and edged perfectly, the greens looked and responded well to approach shots and the tee boxes were well maintained. However, the sand bunkers were rock hard and did not play well.
Relatively flat course (with some exceptions like hole #12), this course plays well for all abilities and ages. While not as glamorous and exciting as the Soldier Hollow or Wasatch Mountain courses, this course is fun and worthwhile if you are ever near Midway, Utah.
While the course is good, the value is on the low end due to their rate being more expensive than the Soldier Hollow and Wasatch Golf courses. Homestead is good, but does not compare to these other courses and should be priced as such.
BEST HOLES
Signature Hole - #3 Par 4 342 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
A visually stunning tee shot with beautiful mountains in the background. Pine trees surround the entire hole and a gorgeous pond directly in front of the tee box. Forced carry to get past the rockwall lined pond. Fairway slopes from left to right bringing all shots on that side back to the middle.
Approach shot is slightly uphill. Green slopes aggressively uphill. Large bunker on the front right and smaller bunker on the back left. From tee to green this hole is fun and beautiful.
Clubhouse Pick: 3
Most Beautiful - #4 Par 4 365 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
Another aesthetically lovely hole from tee to green. Gorgeous mountain with changing leaves in the background, large and mature trees line the left side of the fairway. Uphill from tee to green making this hole play much longer than the yardage on the scorecard. Fairway bunkers on both sides so be exact on your tee shot. Green is deep and slopes aggressively up the mountain.
Clubhouse Pick: 3/4/17
Birdie Time - #17 Par 5 501 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
Fairway runs diagonal from right to left from the tee box. Landing area on the drive is blind from the dips. Low hanging trees on the left side so those hitting 9 degrees or lower on their driver may need to tee up a teensy-bit higher. Fairway is wide and accessible. A creek runs across the front side of the fairway 10 yards short forcing you to layup if not hitting an approach iron into the green on your second. Approach is slightly elevated. Green is extremely wide and slopes downhill from left down to the right. Not a long Par 5, open fairway on the drive and green is accessible.
Clubhouse Pick: 3
Most Likely Bogey - #18 Par 4 402 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey
My runner-up for the course’s Signature Hole. Elevated tee box with a forced carry over a creek that runs diagonal up the hole from left to right. The hole zig-zags left and then back to the right. The creek runs across the fairway and then slithers all the way up the hole along the right side before cutting across the fairway again 110 yards short of the green.
A beautiful pond with various waterfalls and creeks sits on the front right of the hole. If hitting anywhere on the right side for your approach, you will need to go over the water. Left side fairway is recommended for this purpose as well as an overhanging tree on the right side of the fairway.
Approach is uphill. Green is wide and slopes uphill. Really fun, difficult and memorable closing hole.
Clubhouse Pick: 18
Best Par 3 - #12 142 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey
Homestead’s strength is not their Par 3 holes, however #12 is the lone exception. This hole is beautiful, fun, challenging and unique for this course. The tee shot begins from a huge elevated tee box towering over the green. Trees surround the entirety of the hole from tee box to behind the green. These trees protrude into the fairway giving a beautiful and scary vibe for the tee shot. Green is deep and narrow. Water sits on the back left of the green.
Clubhouse Pick: 12
Best Par 4 - #15 360 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
Dogleg right, flat and even fairway. Fairway bunker sits on the right side. A creek runs across the fairway 10 yards short of the green. Greenside bunker on the front right and back left of the hole. Green is almost perfectly round. Beautiful pine trees sit behind the green.
Clubhouse Pick: 3
Best Par 5 - #5 574 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey
Humongous hole that plays shorter, due to being downhill from tee to green. Almost a 90 degree dogleg right. Although not shown on any GPS maps, a small pond sits on the right side bend. Must get past this bend to see the hole on your second shot. Aim for the huge fairway bunker on the left side. It is too far to hit from the tee. The green is EXTREMELY deep and shallow while winding to the back left. A very large bunker sits to the left of the green and 2 smaller bunkers on the right.
Clubhouse Pick: 17
