Course Summary
Murray Parkway Golf Course is located between neighborhoods in Murray, Utah. As in most places around Utah, the beautiful mountain views are found throughout the course. The course was built with beginner to intermediate players in mind. The course is built on rolling terrain but it is gentle enough to walk the course. Water hazards are present on eight of the holes, but only shots on holes #1 and #18 are in any danger of going in.
The course is wide open with very little danger of any kind. The trees are quite spread out and are quite small throughout the course. The rough is cut super short and plays barely any different than hitting from the fairways. Every single green is constructed the same, extremely wide and deep with a gentle slope uphill. Good golfers can score quite low on this course. Long hitters have a change to putt for birdie on almost every hole. This is a great course for a casual round with friends.
Specifics
Clubhouse is old, small and crowded. On the other side is a small café that serves candy bars and drinks. The practice facilities were decent with two large putting greens, one between the clubhouse and the #1 tee box and the other next to the café and the #9 green. The driving range was decent side with mats only. Staff was cordial on the phone and in the clubhouse. Did not see a single employee working on the course.
Course Conditions
The course conditions were much better than I expected. The fairways looked and played fantastic. Only dead grass I consistently noticed on the throat of the green. Rough played too easy for my liking and did not penalize wayward drives in any form. Sand bunkers looked and played as expected. Lots of the bunkers are huge and deep. Tee boxes on the front nine looked and played great but a few on the back nine were long and spongy. Greens are humongous with the same gentle slope uphill. A few dead spots were noticed on the green and some longer patches of grass were scattered as well.
BEST HOLES
Signature Hole - #1 Par 4 391 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
The first hole is the only hole that a large water hazard looms all along the right side. This hole plays as a dogleg right and big hitters will hit through the fairway if they hit the ball straight. Recommended play is to hit your 250 yard club to the middle of the fairway. That leaves you with 140 yards to the middle of the green. As for the green (you will read this for every hole), very deep and slopes uphill. Large bunker on the front right between the green and the end of the lake.
Clubhouse Pick: 1
Most Beautiful - #2 Par 4 409 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey
The tee shot is a little un-nerving from the blues due to a tree branch sticking out on the left side. The view from the tee box is gorgeous a good drive soaring into the air with a majestic mountain in the background. Creek runs along the entire left side but should not come into play at all. Fairway gets extremely narrow at around the 100 yard marker. Perfect tee shot is over the hill on the right side rough. This will feed right into the shallow fairway and leave you with a 135 yard approach into the very deep green. Approach shot plays downhill so play your approach a few yards shorter. Green slopes uphill and has a front right bunker along with a left side bunker.
Clubhouse Pick: 1 or 2
Birdie Time - #15 Par 4 353 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Double Bogey
I shot a 74 this round and my only double bogey came on this hole. Naturally, I selected my double bogey hole as the easiest hole on the course. Makes sense, right? I’ll be kicking myself for days over my sliced tee shot into a construction site (I think, I never officially found my ball). But, if you can keep from hitting right and get past the two fairway bunkers, this hole plays extremely easy. Long hitters can hit right up to the green with a right side bunker that should not come into play at all. Green is deep and slopes uphill.
Clubhouse Pick: 6 or 12
Likely Bogey - #17 Par 3 226 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
Not a lot of tough holes so I’ll select the longest par 3. Green is slightly elevated from the tee box making the shot play just a few yards longer. A large grass valley sits in front of the green so don’t be short on the tee shot. Two large bunkers sit on the back sides of the green. Green slopes uphill and is very deep. Due to the distance, this is a potential 3-putt hole.
Clubhouse Pick: 11 or 17
Best Par 3 - #14 157 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey
Slightly elevated tee box into a downhill green. Green is protected by three separate bunkers, one in the front left, one in the front right and one directly behind. The two front bunkers are large and deep. Green is wide but more shallow than most the greens on the course. Green slopes gently uphill.
Clubhouse Pick: 4
Best Par 4 - #16 361 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
The three best holes on the course are #1, #16 and #18. This dogleg left par 4 can be shortened considerably if you can carry the two humongous fairway bunkers on the left side. If you can carry these bunkers, the hole plays on 280 yards. 40 yards behind the fairway bunkers is a green side bunker protecting the front left side. Ideal shot is a high draw into or near the green but for short hitters, aim 20 yards right of the first fairway bunker. This will leave you with a simple 90 yard wedge shot into the green. As long as you don’t hit a massive hook, there is no real danger going for the green. Stay out of the bunker and don’t go OB to the left and you should be putting for birdie regardless if you go for the green or layup.
Clubhouse Pick: 2 or 16
Best Par 5 - #18 500 Yards
Utah Golf Guy score - Par
If not for #1, this hole would be a shoe-in for the signature hole. The tee shot requires a game plan. From the blue tees, you need 260 yards to carry the creek that runs all the way across the fairway. From the whites, 240 yards. Driving over the creek sets you up for a perfect opportunity to reach the green in two. But, if you land in the creek you will be hoping for a bogey on this hole. The approach shot is slightly uphill to a wide and deep green. Green slopes uphill and is protected by three greenside bunker and a right fairway bunker 30 yards short of the green. A river runs along the left side of the fairway but should not come into play unless you hit a wild hook. Really fun finishing hole.
Clubhouse Pick: 10
