Course Summary

Southgate Golf Club is a municipal course built in the heart of St. George, Utah. The course is walkable for all who are able. The front nine runs along Dixie Drive and meanders alongside the Santa Clara River. Water comes into play for all but one hole on this side. This nine is flat and short. Driver should only be used on holes 1, 2 and 9. Stay out of the water and you will score just fine on the front.

The back nine is longer but much more forgiving. More elevation change on this side but the fairways are wider and only a few holes have water to worry about. There are more risk/reward type holes on this side that can either get you a few shots back or put a few more on the scorecard.

The course is known to be one of the most player-friendly course in the area. The Utah Golf Guy concurs.

Conditions

The conditions were about what you would expect for a municipal course in St George. Overall they did a decent job but large dead spots were found on the tees, fairways and greens. Bunkers played well. Rough was even throughout. The one thing about this course, NO ONE fixes their ball marks on the greens. The Utah Golf Guy would attempt to fix as many as he could be there would literally be 15-20 ball marks on every single green. Without fail, every roll on a green was bumpy and would throw the putt off course.

Clubhouse is under construction so for the time being they were scored a “4” in that area. Will re-score once the clubhouse is complete.

BEST HOLES

Signature Hole – #9 Par 5 571 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

A few options could be argued for the title of “Signature Hole” but the most memorable for me was the long Par 5, #9. This hole also doubles as the “Likely Bogey” hole (no small feat for a Par 5). This hole is long and dangerous, especially off the tee. From the tips, you need to hit at least 225 yards to clear the creek that not only cuts across the hole before the fairway but snakes its way back across for the second shot. A large pond sits on the right side. This hole makes you hit long and accurately off the tee. Fairway is wider than it appears and there is a lot more room to the right side than on the left. Hitting your approach is uphill so you will need to add 1 club to get it there. Green is deep and slopes uphill. The green as a whole is quite undulated and most of the edges will funnel lofted shots back to the center.

 Clubhouse Pick: 9

Most Beautiful – #17 Par 5 449 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

By far the shortest Par 5 on the course. Big hitters will have a huge advantage but will need to clear the large pond on the left. From the tips, you will need 275 to carry the back right of the hazard. Tee shot is downhill so you can take 10-15 yards off the carry. Average to short hitters will need to play along the right side of the pond. Approach is slightly uphill so might need to play ½ a club more. One bunker protects the front side of the green and has a nasty lip. Another bunker sits to the left of the putting surface. Green slopes uphill from front to back. If you can stay out of the hazard, this is a great chance for birdie.

Clubhouse Pick: 14 or 18

Birdie Time – #12 Par 4 348 Yards

A huge, elevated tee shot that makes this hole play even shorter than it shows. Medium sized hills filled with large rocks line both sides of the fairway. A creek (empty when we played) runs across the fairway about 35 yards short of the green. Approach shot is slightly elevated hitting down towards the green. A large bunker protects the front left and two small pot bunkers on the far right. Green is small and slopes aggressively uphill. Land your approach below the hole for an uphill putt or you could potentially 3-putt.

Clubhouse Pick: 12

Likely Bogey – #9 Par 5 571 Yards

Best Par 3 – #3 170 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score – Par

A beautiful Par 3 that was in the running for “Signature Hole” and “Most Beautiful” as well. All carry over a large pond. No bunkers. Little to no room on the right side of the green. Make sure you hit enough to land on the putting surface.

Clubhouse Pick: 3

Best Par 4 - #4 348 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Bogey

The driving range net runs along the left side of this hole. A large pond sits on the right side, about 60 yards short of the front of the green. The pond protects the entire right side of the green. Big hitters will need to hit over the trees on the left side, but be aware of the fairway bunkers on the left side. The smart play is to hit 15 yards short of the pond and use a wedge from just over 100 yards. Not too much of an advantage going up the left side, with the bunkers and uneven fairway. Green is deep. Error to the left side of the green for a miss hit.

 Clubhouse Pick: 2

Best Par 5 – #18 511 Yards

Utah Golf Guy score - Par

Fun finishing hole with an elevated tee shot. Fairway is a huge dogleg left. Will be able to cut the corner but it will be a blind tee shot going over thick trees on the left side. Fairway slopes downhill all the way down to the green. Landing on the fairway will give you an extra 20-30 yards of roll. Bunkers surround the green; one on the front left and another on the left side. Two fairway bunkers on the right side, 50 yards short of the green and another large bunker on the backside.

There is a house that sits on the dogleg corner that appears to be riddled with bullet holes from all of the golf ball attacks.

 Clubhouse Pick: 17
